Soft Star Fireside Slippers Review

This is a rare post for this blog: a ‘thing’ review. You may have noticed that I rarely host giveaways and almost never endorse products on this blog. Not because I am not asked: I get requests almost daily for reviews of products. But you’re here, and I’m here, to focus on living with less stuff. The exception I have made, and am now making again, is for Soft Star shoes. Why? Because so many of you have recommended these shoes and many more of you have asked for ethically sourced well made apparel. Plus, I really like what this company is doing.

Soft Star contacted me about doing another shoe review for a fall style (I reviewed their Ballerine Flat here) and while their styles looked great I had a problem: I don’t need any fall shoes. Right now I’m living in a pair of New Balance sneakers, my Frye boots and a pair of snow boots. But what I was in search of was a warm house slipper for winter. Normally I just wear a pair of wool socks over the winter but we’ve move to a much colder climate. And I work from home. And we keep the heat low during the day. Enter the Soft Star Fireside Sheepskin Slipper.

Soft Star Fireside Slipper

There are a lot of glowing reviews of these slippers on the Soft Star website. Like gushing over the top reviews. People said their only regret was not buying them sooner. Cozy, perfect, warm, soft, easy to slip on.  My feet are often cold and it had just dipped into the negative temps here when the slippers arrived. When my feet are cold I tend to get grumpy. Could these slippers be a mood booster for me? Also, would they fit? I have large feet and a very high arch. Non lace up closed shoes are often tight across the top of my foot. Many many years ago I had a pair of slippers that were warm but so tight across the bridge of my foot I had to give them up. Would this style fit my odd feet?

Yes to all of the above. I understand why everyone has written such glowing reviews of these slippers. I too am now a super fan. These slippers are soft, comfortable and so so warm. And having warm feet makes me happy. I’m so into these slippers that when I went away for one night I brought them with me. They are perfect for living in the cold Kootenays and I get a lot of use out of them working from home.

What I Love About Soft Star Shoes the Company

  • Soft Star is doing good. It’s hard to find companies that are creating earth friendly and attractive and wallet friendly goods.
  • they come in my size! It’s very frustrating to get recommended North American made or fair trade or eco-friendly fashions that only come in conventional sizes (I’m 6ft tall and wear a size 11 or 12 shoe and wear a 14 tall in clothing). But Soft Star has a great range of sizes and you can even custom order your own shoes in your color and material preferences.

Price: these shoes are $120 and there’s good reason for the price. Soft Star shoes use mostly USA made leather and use non-formaldehyde tanning methods that are better for the earth and for us. They produce all the shoes right in their factory in Oregon. You’re paying for quality and craftsmanship with Soft Star shoes – not marketing and fancy packaging. In our home this price is definitely in the splurge range but I’m so smitten with these slippers I want my whole family to have them (maybe once the kids feet stop growing!).

Soft Star shoes also sell Sparkies, a child size Fireside slipper, that are adorable and great for growing young feet.

I’ve had dozens and dozens of comments and emails recommending Soft Star shoes so I am thrilled to be able to chime in in agreement: these are great shoes!

Disclosure: I was provided a pair of Soft Star Shoes for review but all views are my own.

  • Another great thing about Soft Star. Their “factory” is a workshop in a beautifully restored roller skating rink in Philomath, Oregon (just minutes from my home!). The skating rink was an eyesore for many years, but now it’s a gorgeous building, with skating memorabilia and the original wooden floor is now the lobby. Soft Star actively participates in community activities like the Rodeo Parade, and have open houses and tours available. Just a fantastic company with a wonderful product.

    • Thank you, Nancy. I love hearing this! The people I’ve interacted with at Soft Star have been so lovely. Great to hear they are wonderful members of their community as well 🙂
